Meme Marketing more than just a trend
More so than ever before, we are seeing the rise in meme marketing in the digital sphere. As we scroll through our newsfeeds, we are confronted with a continuum of cat videos and the occasional Donald Trump and Oprah memes, that has become the new normal in our digital world for both consumers and businesses.
What makes meme marketing so incredibly unique is their ability to communicate attitudes, feelings, and situations within the digital environment. Because of their great success and extreme popularity, it comes as no surprise that brands want a piece of the pie and are adamantly jumping on the meme bandwagon.
Memes have begun to influence a wider segment of the population due to their quick wittiness and hilarious sense of humour. There is an evident stagnation and decreased usage of traditional marketing, rather businesses and brands are utilising digital marketing forms such as meme marketing that has a strong ability to connect and target the tech heads of Generation Z. With this portion of society investing over 200 minutes a day on digital devices and social media platforms, it would be wasteful not to market to their needs and wants. However, Gen Z is not a fan of advertising, and they can smell it from a mile away. Brands have had to reposition and re-strategise their advertising and create content that is relatable, engaging and is not blatantly obvious in terms of advertising.
3 steps to effective memes
1. Wittiness is the key to successful memes. The soul purpose of memes is to display a sense of humour.
2. Create memes off established success and existing trends. This will grab the attention of your audience and prompt them to engage.
3. There is no point memeing about something unrelatable. The memes you create must be in relation to your brand and its image.
Memes are becoming a new way of marketing in business. It’s the perfect combination of humour, wittiness, and engagement for audiences. Its integration on all social media platforms enables it to get its reach it deserves, offering an added revenue stream for brands and are increasing the brand engagement with current audiences.

05 Feb 2019Even! Combining visual and written elements to evoke the right emotion in a way that is relevant to your product is very powerful. People buy images/visuals, and people have a sense of humour. Your brand also has a sense of humour, no matter what your market. Well suited to your audience, it is mighty.
