My Internship Experience at Marketing Eye
As a second-year commerce student, and someone who has always been interested in the In’s and Out’s of marketing, being offered an internship with Marketing Eye was a dream come true. Whilst I do love my university degree and am no doubt learning the key fundamentals that will assist me in my future careers, it is all relatively theoretical. At Marketing Eye, and in my position as an intern, I was given the chance to actively use the skills I have been taught, engage with real-life tasks, and ask deeper industry-specific questions.
Whilst my internship experience was mainly done by working from home (thanks COVID-19), I was lucky enough to have met the close-knit team at the beginning of the internship, of whom have continued to support and challenge me despite the virtual working environment.
One thing I loved most about the day-to-day at Marketing Eye is that I never felt like just another intern, I was really part of the team! I was involved in high priority work and given autonomy over decisions such as blog topics. What is more, my opinion or questions were always welcomed or even asked for and taken into consideration.
If you’re thinking about getting a marketing internship, do it. Before I began my Marketing Eye internship, I was pretty inexperienced in the world of marketing and really did not know what to expect. Now, as my internship comes to a close, I thought I’d take time to reflect on a few of the many things I learned along the way.
#1 - Ask Questions
No one wants to look stupid or admit they don’t understand. Often at the start of my internship experience, I was nervous to ask questions or clarify instructions. However, that all changed when I learned just how focused the Marketing Eye Team is on helping you learn. Whenever I was confused or made a mistake, the team was always quick to reassure me, explain in further detail and make sure I feel comfortable with the task moving forward. Put simply, everyone was there to help.
#2 - How a Small Business Functions
Despite only working in the agency for two weeks, and virtually from home after, this internship experience gave me a real insight into how small businesses can function. Marketing Eye as a company emphasises the importance of teamwork and open communication, two aspects I have now realised will be critical to me in future work environments. Working directly with experienced and knowledgeable marketing experts is not something to take for granted, I learned so much from each different Marketing Eye professional, a real testament to their intern development and teaching focus.
#3 - Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
Finally, this internship really taught me to embrace challenges and tackle new experiences head-on. Whilst you’re not expected to know everything, you are expected to try new things. For example, I had never written a blog post, made a social media calendar, combined media lists or completed SEO checks, but now they are second nature. Every day, Marketing Eye has encouraged me to learn something new, and whilst trying new tasks can be scary, it has helped me to improve how I learning and allowed me to gain meaningful work experience.
After only three months, I can confidently say that interning with Marketing Eye was one of the best work experiences I have ever had. I genuinely feel I improved as a young professional and as a person. I am really proud of myself for being able to embrace this new journey and put myself to the test as a marketing intern. I learned a lot and would definitely recommend doing it to others. By pushing yourself to get an internship, you will gain knowledge and professional experience in your subject of interest. I am glad and thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the Marketing Eye family.
