Why birthday's remind us of things we need to remember
I woke up unexpectantly at 3am and have stayed awake ever since. Instead of going back to sleep, I looked out my window and soaked up the view of the parkland. I don't think I have ever seen it at 3am before. It was beautiful, peaceful and the perfect setting to the start of a new year in my life.
Many writers are thinkers. You think, then you write. Capturing moments in your life by writing them down can be very therapeutic. It allows you to go back and remember the things that have happened to you to make you who you are. The excitement you had when you went on your first overseas holiday without parents. The feeling of buying your first designer dress. That night when you felt truly beautiful. The first time you fell in love. And the day your father died.
Good and bad, memories are there for us to reflect on, just like the anniversary of our births.
It is not by accident that I was born on the 28th of August. A Virgo at the core, with a moon in Leo. Someone who tries hard to be perfect most of the time, but completely understands that going a little crazy and being a little off-centre really is the essence of showcasing personality and spirit.
I am sure it is by no accident that those who remember my birthday fall in a few categories; ex-boyfriends, family, and good friends.
From one minute past midnight, my ex-boyfriends have been sending me text messages. What did we do without text? One by one, they have wished me a happy birthday. Each of whom I have shared amazing experiences with and that hold a fond, loving memory in my heart. I have been fortunately that many of my past partners have been truly remarkable, caring and inspiring people - but timing is everything and for whatever reason it was not meant to be.
Family are there through thick and thin. My love for my family shows no bounds and extends to some of my cousins who are as close to me as my brothers. They are phenomenal people inside and out. I am truly blessed.
And friends... what would we do without friends? It's 7.50am in the morning in Australia and already I have had more than 40 text messages, a dozen emails and some social media "happy birthday's" too.
I feel more fortunate every day for everything that I have in my life. The people who I spend time with are special. They are all good people with tremendous hearts and even better personalities. Each one of them make my life better, just by being there.
So for today, happy birthday to all of those born on this wonderful day. Where I am, the sun is shining, the coffee is great and my dog is asleep on my foot snoring.
xx

01 Sep 2012Thank you Mellissah for sharing why birthday's do remind us of things we need to remember and here're wishing you a Happy Belated Birthday.
ReplySometimes, its does take special occasion like birthdays allows us to think back on those good and bad memories.
I recently celebrated my 23rd birthday on the 8th of August. And because its my second year as an international student studying in Melbourne, I celebrated my birthday away from my parents for the second time. But, thank god for social media and skype more importantly, it allows me to stay in touch with friends and family back home.
It's this particular birthday that really hit home. I am an only child and the closest kinship I have are my parents, so being away from home for the first time ever in almost 2 years now made me miss them dearly.
I deeply appreciate and am entirely grateful to my parents for allowing me to experience an overseas university life and for funding my education for all these years. It has made me more independent and wise and it being away from them also gives me a deeper appreciation of family relationship and it gives me motivation to make good with my future and eventually be able to provide my parents a peaceful retirement lifestyle that they deserve.

28 Aug 2012Happy Birthday Mellissah.
ReplyI hope you are having a great morning. I have yet to develop the eloquent skill of writing in a way that captures moments in all their glory and detail. You are lucky to have developed this skill so strongly. As you say, developing such a skill provides a mechanism for us to see how far we have grown as people and to reflect on the improtant and not so important times in our lives that make us the very people we are. Once again, Happy Birthday and best wishes for the new year to come.
