Where is your business heading?
After having a very relaxing 4 days off with family and friends in Sydney, I am back in my Sydney office, ready to go.
It’s 6am and I had to hold myself back from coming in earlier.
You see, entrepreneurs are like that. They live and breathe their businesses and can often spend all day and all night in the office finishing off work, coming up with new ideas and generating business.
For eleven years, this has been me and every day, I can’t wait to get into the office and start working on building my business.
Marketing Eye has been a dream business. After the first few years of building processes, systems and getting through HR issues, it really has been pretty much smooth sailing.
HR issues were the hardest and most personal to go through because it was my choices that were destroying what I was trying to achieve. Marketers unfortunately come with a myriad of qualifications and experience, and working for Marketing Eye isn’t for everyone.
Marketing Eye consultants need to be very competent at strategy and able to implement across the entire marketing mix. With most marketers, they are good at one or two areas of marketing, but not so good at others. So they convince companies they work with to go with where their skill base lies.
At Marketing Eye, you would get fired for that! I once hired a Marketing Manager, who also lectured at a well-known University in Melbourne in marketing. He came with the highest level of qualifications on paper, and yet, was the most under-qualified Marketing Manager I have ever employed. He went into a small IT company, and convinced them to spend money on advertising in trade editorials that were industry focused according to his own skill base. The company not only wasted money (which we refunded!!) but they also lost confidence in whether marketing was going to help their business. We quickly changed this mindset and helped them grow their business, but it could have been alot different if we hadn’t been exposed to this marketing disaster.
What we hadn’t realised was that the so-called highly qualified consultant really had no skills in marketing in the real world, and his ‘real world’ jobs were advertising sales not marketing as he had put on his carefully submitted CV. His references were friends, not the CEO or direct reports in the businesses he was employed.
Now, Marketing Eye, under the direction of Julie Schoneveld, employs people who are ready to learn every area of marketing and who want to be the best marketers in town. This has worked wonders and our clients have been rewarded by our success in this area.
Today, re-engage your team and make sure they know where the business is heading. It may only take 5 minutes, but it reinforces your commitment to growth and success. It also gives employees the opportunity to remember that their job is not just a job, but part of a bigger picture.
Often giving staff an insight into marketing is invigorating and will create a sense of enthusiasm amongst even your most cynical staff members.
Where is your business heading? Everyone should know!
